Heaton's story begins with a series of life changes that left her feeling adrift. As her children left home and her acting career took a backseat, she found herself grappling with a newfound sense of purpose. "Right before the pandemic, my children had left home, and I wasn't working," she recalled. "The things that had always anchored me – my family and my work – were gone. I started thinking, 'What am I supposed to do today?'" This period of uncertainty marked the beginning of her drinking pattern, which gradually escalated.
"A glass of wine while cooking became wine with dinner, wine while cleaning up, and wine while watching Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy!," she shared. "One night I realized I had almost finished an entire bottle by myself. As an actor, you study behavior. I noticed my own behavior changing. I was thinking about alcohol differently." This realization, coupled with a prayer seeking guidance from her god, marked a turning point.
The moment that truly jolted her into action occurred during a family gathering. "The next night I was with my sons and their friends, and I couldn't pronounce the word 'tradition.' I tried three times. My youngest son said, 'That's great, Mom. You can't even speak.'" Heaton described feeling "completely mortified." The next morning, she made a solemn promise to herself and her higher power, "Okay, God. Message received." This moment marked the beginning of her sobriety journey, which has now spanned eight years.
Heaton's decision to move from Los Angeles to Nashville in 2023, leaving her sons behind, was not just a change of scenery but a deliberate choice to escape the high taxes, crime rates, and homelessness prevalent in LA. "We just thought that the taxes are high, the crime is high, the homelessness is high, and we're not working in LA as much as we're working outside of LA, so why don't we leave?" she explained on The Rubin Report podcast. The move to Nashville, where she has friends and a familiar environment, has been a refreshing change.
As an actress who has navigated the challenges of aging in the spotlight, Heaton is candid about her efforts to maintain her health. "I do hormone replacement therapy. I take magnesium. I take minoxidil for my hair," she shared. "We're all just trying to hold everything together. It's a full-time job. But I also think we need to relax a little. If you're alive and you have your health, that is the best." Heaton's perspective on aging is refreshing, emphasizing the importance of self-care and a positive mindset.
In her words, "I love that women are finally talking honestly about aging. Inside, I still feel energetic and curious. I have all the wisdom of my years but the spirit of someone younger."
